PRETTY RIVER ACADEMY GETS GOVERNMENT HANDOUT

REPORT FROM FACE GROUP OPPOSING GOVERNMENT FUNDING OF PRIVATE SCHOOL.

“Federal and provincial governments have granted $523,000 to Pretty River Academy, a PRIVATE school in Collingwood, to build a soccer field for its 156 students. Applications by the Town of Collingwood for other more needed public recreational facilities under the same program were turned down. Taxpayers’ money should not be used for this purpose.
The MP for Simcoe-Grey claims credit for the grants and argues it is a good use of public resources. The situation is farcical and needs to be corrected” Go to www.notprettyriver.com to see see full details and pictures.

Hi: Actually, it’s $506,000 in grants. However, there is also an additional $250,000 being put forward by a private benefactor which has some implications as well.

Since Pretty River Academy is a charitable corporation it can issue a tax receipt for $250,000 entitling the donor to deduct that amount from her income. Assuming she is in the 50% tax bracket (which seems reasonable enough), her income tax payable would be reduced by $125,000.

So, the total bill for the taxpayer is $631,000. People tell me that a clever accountant can reduce the tax payable even further but I’ll leave it at that.

  2. Excellent site, keep up the good work. I read a lot of blogs on a daily basis and for the most part, people lack substance but, I just wanted to make a quick comment to say I’m glad I found your blog. Thanks,

    A definite great read.. 🙂
