Reading and watching the recent events surrounding the antics of Rob Ford and his sidekick brother Doug, reminded me of a movie I recently watched called the ‘Untouchables’. Here Elliot Ness goes up against the notorious gangster Al Capone. As Capone is finally convicted for tax crimes, he cannot believe that he, Al Capone has lost his case, and starts a barrage of insults and threats. What a parallel to the recent news reports about the Ford brothers. As a conservative I find Ford an embarrassment to the party and can only hope that he never attempts to run provincially or federally. It is sad that the era of respect in government has long gone. The term Honourable was lost shortly after cameras were allowed to film proceedings. Now it’s all about shouting and undermining your opponents regardless of the validity of the idea or proposal. Grand-standing is the new norm in politics and the Ford brothers are certainly good at that. Let’s hope the next Mayor will bring some order and decorum back to city hall.
